Freeze It: Stolen-Card Panic
Fintech

You glance at your phone and see a charge you did not make. Then another. Your card is compromised, right now, and every second it stays live is money gone. Heart pounding, hands shaking, you open your banking app and start hunting through Menu, Cards, Card Settings, Security, Manage, while the fraud keeps rolling.
Freezing a card should be the fastest thing a banking app does. In most of them, it is buried three menus deep and styled like a routine setting. In a panic, buried is broken.
The brief: Design the flow to freeze a lost or stolen card and stop the fraud in seconds, for a user who is panicking, in a loud place, with shaky hands.
Who you're designing for
Priya, 29, just spotted an unfamiliar charge while standing on a crowded bus. Her heart is racing, the bus is jolting, and her thumb keeps missing. She needs to stop this now, not read a manual.
Constraints
Freeze is one tap from the first screen (or a lock-screen widget). No digging through menus.
Big, forgiving targets. Large tap areas that survive shaky hands and near-misses on a moving bus.
A calm, clear confirmation: the card is frozen, here is exactly what that stops, delivered without adding to the panic.
Next steps stay optional. Offer "report fraud" and "order a replacement," but never force them in the panic moment.
Bonus round
Make the freeze instantly reversible with the same one-tap ease, for the "found it in my other jacket" moment, so nobody is punished for acting fast.
What good looks like
Priya freezes the card in under 10 seconds from opening the app.
She feels calmer after tapping, not more panicked.
Nothing irreversible happens by accident, and undoing is as fast as doing.
Suggested tools
Figma for the screens, Protopie to prototype the confirmation motion and haptics, and Maze to test whether a rushed person can find the freeze on the first try.
Brand vibes
Monzo for its genuinely instant, prominent card freeze.
Revolut for fast card controls and disposable virtual cards.
Apple Card in Wallet for calm, minimal, legible controls under stress.
Felipe's tip
In a panic, the interface is the paramedic: calm, fast, one clear action. This is behavioral design under maximum stress, and it is the same fintech-under-pressure thinking behind the Monety micro-loan app I designed. If you want to warm up on one-thumb reach first, try One-Hand Wonder.
