EV Charging UX Challenge: Range Ready

Most EV charging apps are maps with a payment problem. They drop a dot on a screen, then let you drive twenty minutes to find the charger dead, blocked by a delivery truck, or demanding an account you do not have. You planned the trip. The app planned nothing.

The brief: Design a mobile flow that gets an EV driver from "low battery, unfamiliar area" to "plugged in and charging" without a single unpleasant surprise.

Who you're designing for: Marcela, 41, driving her family out of Bogota for the weekend with 9% battery and a back seat full of restless kids. She has never touched this charger network before, and she is not going to read a manual in a parking lot. Range anxiety is a feeling before it is a data problem, so treat it like behavioral design: design the calm, not just the map.

Constraints:

  • The driver learns a charger's real-time availability, charging speed, and plug compatibility within 2 taps of opening the app.

  • Reliability is shown up front, not buried. Every charger surfaces whether it actually worked for the last few drivers, not just that it exists on a map.

  • The full "arrive, authenticate, start charging" path is 3 steps or fewer and works for a first-time user with no pre-existing account.

  • Every primary control is reachable one-handed and legible in direct sunlight (text contrast 4.5:1 minimum).

Bonus round: Add a "will I make it?" state that weighs remaining range against the distance to the next three viable chargers, and gives Marcela the honest answer before she commits to the on-ramp.

What good looks like:

  • A stranger with 9% battery opens your flow and feels calmer within five seconds, because the screen answers "can I charge here, right now?" before anything else.

  • Broken or occupied chargers are visible before the drive, not discovered on arrival.

  • Starting a charge feels like tapping to pay, not like filing taxes.

Suggested tools: Figma for the flows, Protopie or Figma prototyping for the arrive-and-authenticate motion, Stark to check sunlight contrast, and pen and paper first for the map-versus-list decision.

Brand vibes:

  • PlugShare, for how crowdsourced check-ins turn a field of dots into a map you can trust.

  • A Better Route Planner (ABRP), for turning range math into a decision a stressed driver can actually act on.

  • Tesla's Supercharger flow, for plug-in-and-it-just-charges authentication with almost no taps.

I designed route planning for the two-wheeled version of this tension in MotoSmart: same problem of range, stops, and a rider who cannot look down for long.

Felipe's tip:

Trust is a feature. A charger you are not sure about is worse than no charger, because it costs the one thing a low battery cannot spare: time.
