The solution
Buildertrend Wallet was designed to provide full financial transparency and control, addressing the specific needs of builders. Several key features were implemented to achieve this:
Buildertrend Wallet’s onboarding process ensures KYC compliance while making it easy for builders to set up accounts and receive payments quickly.
The financial dashboard offers builders a clear view of all transactions, providing transparency into the financial health of each project.
Issue physical or virtual debit cards to team members with full control over spending limits, ensuring that funds are used appropriately for project needs.
Track expenses in real time and associate them with specific projects, ensuring accurate financial reporting and transparency.
Fund your wallet from client payments, connected bank accounts, or vendor rewards, and withdraw funds to a linked bank account when needed.
Flow maps
Understandung Buildertrend Wallet's user experience
After outlining the key features, it’s essential to visualize how these features work together to create a smooth user experience. Flow maps were created to ensure seamless navigation and intuitive interactions across different functionalities within the wallet.
General wallet flow
The general wallet flow covers all major interactions users can have within the platform, from accessing their dashboard to managing transactions. This flow ensured that users could easily track their funds, make payments, and manage their financial activities with minimal friction.
Pay someone flow
This flow specifically maps out how users can initiate and complete a payment to another individual. The goal was to ensure the payment process was as simple as possible, providing clear steps from inputting payment details to confirmation.
Withdrawal flow
The withdrawal flow outlines the steps users take to withdraw funds from the wallet into a linked bank account. This map highlights key moments where users need confirmation and how additional security measures were built in to prevent errors.

Challenges
One of the most significant challenges was creating an easy onboarding experience that complied with KYC regulations. Traditionally, builders had to visit a bank and present physical documentation to open an account. The goal was to replace this with a fully digital process that was quick, compliant, and user-friendly. This required building a system that gathered detailed documentation while ensuring a near-instant approval process, which involved several iterations and refinements.
Learned lessons
The most important lesson learned from the development of Buildertrend Wallet was the value of collaboration with end users during the design process. By involving builders early on, the product team was able to avoid false starts and ensure the wallet addressed real pain points from the beginning. Additionally, the ability to launch a complex financial tool in under four months highlighted the effectiveness of a well-coordinated team and an agile development process.
